Short answer: a Vietnam eVisa cannot be extended inside Vietnam. The dates are fixed when it is issued. To stay longer, the usual route is to leave before it expires and come back on a new eVisa. If a Vietnamese company, school or family member sponsors you, a different visa type may be possible through them. That has to be started before your current visa runs out.
Your options
1. Leave and come back on a new eVisa
This is what most travellers do. Apply for the new eVisa a few working days before you leave, with an entry date on or after your planned return. Common routes are Ho Chi Minh City to Cambodia via Moc Bai, and central Vietnam to Laos via Lao Bao. Check whether you need a visa for the neighbouring country. Many nationalities do.
2. Sponsored visa
If you are working, studying or have family in Vietnam, the sponsor can apply for the right visa type or a temporary residence card. This is paperwork through the sponsor and immigration, not through the eVisa portal.
3. Visa-exempt nationalities
If your passport is visa-exempt, you can leave and come back and start a new exempt stay. See do I need a visa.
Don't overstay. An overstay, even of one day, means a fine at an immigration office before you can leave. It is recorded, and it can make future visas harder to get.
Plan it better next time
- Ask for 90 days from the start. The government fee is the same as for 30.
- Choose multiple entry if you might leave and return.
- Count the dates from your real arrival, not your booking date.

Can I apply for the new eVisa while I'm still in Vietnam?
You can submit it, but you can only use it after you have left and re-entered. Some applications are only processed once your exit is recorded, so allow extra time.
Does multiple entry let me stay longer?
No. The expiry date doesn't change, however many times you leave and return.
My eVisa has already expired.
Go to an immigration office as soon as possible to settle the overstay before you try to leave.
