Vietnam eVisa payment failed: how to fix it

Short answer: payment failures on the official portal are common, especially with foreign cards. They usually mean your bank or the payment gateway declined the charge, and in most cases no money is taken. If you see "The payment failed, please recreate profile and retry payment", the payment session has broken. Retrying on the same page rarely works. You need a fresh application.

Why it fails

• Card type. Visa cards go through most often. Mastercard is hit and miss. American Express and UnionPay fail often.
• Your bank's fraud filter. A US-dollar charge from a Vietnamese government gateway looks unusual to many banks.
• VPN or privacy settings. A VPN, strict tracking protection or blocked pop-ups can break the payment step.
• Timeouts. The portal is slow at busy times, and the payment session expires.

Fix it in this order

1. Close the failed tab. Don't keep pressing "pay".
2. Turn off any VPN.
3. Open a private/incognito window, preferably in a different browser, and allow pop-ups.
4. Start a new application and fill it in again carefully.
5. Pay with a different card, ideally a Visa card. Or call your bank first and say you are making an international payment to Vietnam.

If a "pending" amount appears on your card after a failed attempt, it is usually a temporary hold. It disappears on its own within a few days. Don't count it as a payment, and don't let it push you into paying three or four times.

You paid, but the application isn't in your list

The portal's "submitted applications" list isn't reliable across sessions. What counts is the registration code (it starts with "E") sent to your email. Search for it in the portal's status check.
